Saft's Latest-Technology High-Power NiMH And LiON Cells On Show At Las Vegas

(Thanks to Andrew Bartlett of Roger Staton Associates for emailing EVUK with this report)

Saft, The Battery Company, will be showing off its latest battery technologies at the first annual Advanced Automotive Battery Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, February 5-8 2001.

Saft has the expertise to work closely with customers to optimize and integrate the right product for the right application together with the manufacturing know-how to provide advanced battery technologies for today's and tomorrow's electric and hybrid vehicles.

The company is committed to satisfying all automotive on-board power needs from high power for hybrid and 42 V automotive systems to high energy for electric vehicles. Its advanced nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) and lithium-ion (LiON) technologies - both of which are available - meet the challenge, delivering real-life trial experience coupled with solid data demonstrating their effectiveness.

Saft's new high-power NiMH cell series has been specifically designed to fulfill the high-power requirements of hybrid vehicles and 42-volt networks. They provide economical choices that combine custom sizes with mass-produced economies. Performance and life cycle are outstanding. Life duration with power cycles at 5 percent DOD exceeds 300,000 cycles.

Under the sponsorship of the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles (PNGV) - which comes under the aegis of the U.S. Department of Energy - Saft has also developed a family of high-power LiON cells designed for and ideally suited to power-assist and 42-volt system applications. The many benefits include high-voltage electrochemistry (which means fewer cells per pack); low weight; a high life cycle; and high efficiency.

The Advanced Automotive Battery Conference is the first devoted to the worldwide shift in automotive battery power systems, with keynote speakers from leading Japanese, European and North American organizations.

Saft is the battery activity of Alcatel. Alcatel builds next generation networks, delivering integrated end-to-end voice and data solutions to established and new carriers, as well as enterprises and consumers worldwide. With 120,000 employees and sales of EURO 21.3 billion ($25.0 billion), Alcatel operates in more than 130 countries.

In the field of telecommunications and power cables, Alcatel offers products, systems and services that meet the growing requirements of three main markets: infrastructure, industry and construction. The batteries and components businesses also form part of this strategy of a global approach to markets, offering integrated solutions for clients who operate on an increasingly international basis.
