THINKING OUTSIDE THE LOOP, OUT OF THE (ICE-)BOX AND AHEAD OF THE 'CURVE': PETROL-TAX-FREE,
EMISSION-FREE. SMART-TECH."
At the start of April, amid the man-the-lifeboats and long-predicted
turm-OIL(...ha,ha) and pandemonium at Rover, EVUK's Jim Carlucci dispatched
this urgent personal plea to Solectria, co-creator of the
prize-winning Sunrise EV (373 miles-a-gallon/cost £3.50, 75 mph, room for
4-5):
SUNRISE SALVATION??
Hello ,from $5.50-a-gallon UK..,
- I and other ZEV campaigners here in the UK are wondering how you
might respond to the following:
- As you must know, Rover Cars - known as the 'English Patient' - face
imminent collapse - with the probable loss of 50,000 jobs. Basically the
Rover/BMW chiefs have admitted they just can't find enough buyers for their
old-tech, innovation-free and boring cars....meanwhile high-powered
venture-capitalists "ALCHEMY" under a certain maverick Jon Moulton have
stepped into the breach and announced plans to develop a radical new
generation of 'technology driven' vehicles - most significantly, for me,
stating that steel chasses etc. would be replaced by high-tech aluminium and
composite materials. Solectria's specialty I believe.(I am told that one of
the reasons given by carmakers for not taking on the SUNRISE was their
unwillingness to switch to aluminium/composite...)
Anyway....a 'dream' headline for many of us here in the UK would be
something like:
"ALCHEMY to form future-proof strategic alliance with Solectria to mass
produce revolutionary Zero Emission 'SUNRISE' all-electric vehicles for UK
and European market..."
Any hope?
You have many, many frustrated, eco-minded and overtaxed Sunrise admirers
...(and Toyota Prius/Honda Insight detractors) this side of the pond. Will flattery get
us anywhere or will the above headline remain forever a fantasy?
Your thoughts - bemused or otherwise - would be appreciated.
Solectria responds:
Thank you for your interest in Solectria. We have not heard of Mr. Jon
Moulten, but if you have any contact information for him or web links to
projects he is working of, these would be of interest.
Jim obliges with the following information:
You may or may not know that the UK (and European) media is pretty much
preoccupied with the Rover/BMW/Alchemy turmoil. I have attempted to find
contact details for the maverick and illusive Mr. Moulten - head of Alchemy
Partners - so far without result.
In the meantime further research has produced some VERY interesting background and track-record info: in
1998 for example Alchemy acquired Envirotest Systems a US emissions-testing
company in a 650 million dollar deal. Moulten set up (quote) "renowned New
York venture capitalist firm KKR " a few years back together with top-shelf
partners such as Abbey National Bank. The UK's leading newspaper the Daily
Telegraph has some extremely informative articles on the Alchemy/Rover plans
and until I am able to locate precise contact details, am attaching here a
few, very relevant recent, persuasive articles from their pages. If you are
at all interested could I also suggest clicking on the Daily Telegraph's
excellent search engine and searching on 'alchemy'..the articles headed:
"Alchemy boss promises to transform ' tarnished firm" and another headed
"Alchemy aims to turn Rover's ruin to Gold" are particulary
relevant,inspiring, informative.
EVUK footnote: Oh no! The Phoenix consortium - not
Alchemy - are handed Rover for a tenner. Worse news still - John
Towers, head of Phoenix, tells the press his first priority is to "let
people know how good Rover cars are.". Aargh! Can we now expect yet
another zillion pound, red white and blue, hollow advertising campaign and
marketing-makeover?
Will Phoenix ever de-'ICE' its wings, change its stripes?...or will it wind
up a terminally stuffed dodo? Out for a dismal duck? So far we've waited in
vain for any mention even of hybrid-electric or fuel-cell plans - let alone
pure battery power. Come on Towers&Co, it's surely time to take a wild
imaginative leap into the 21st Century...the 'English Patient' urgently
needs a breath of fresh air and an engine-transplant.....
