Mobile Emissions Amnesia

Sir/Madam,
It is at once amusing AND depressing to compare the media's - and the public's - concerns about the possible mobile-phone health threat with their persistent state of 'pollution denial' and convenient 'environmental amnesia' when it comes to the subject of the BELOVED CAR.
St. George's Hospital statistics - among many others - tell us that around 25,000 deaths a year occur as a result of traffic pollution - and considerably more hospitalisations. Chronic bronchitis, asthma, circulatory and heart disease are just a few of the illnesses that can be dangerously compounded by the likes of benzene, toluene, xylene, 1,3 butadiene, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide , nitrous oxide etc. etc. The MTBE additive scandal seems hardly to have registered on the media's radar screens. As with GM foods and phone radiation the cumulative effects of vehicle pollution over an entire human-lifespan are largely unknown... So why is this potentially CAR-cinogenic cocktail so persistently ignored by the media, politicians AND the public? Or all the blame always conveniently off-loaded onto buses, lorries, diesel vehicles and the like?
Unlike mobile phones the greatest scandal of all is that viable emission-free alternatives to the Internal Combustion Engine HAVE been developed - but repeatedly ignored and stifled by both the carmakers and the media.
- The words "double" and "standards" DO spring to mind - frequently. When can we expect BBC investigative reporters to deliver a full, gloves-off, probing report into the health effects - and cost to the NHS - of traffic pollution and the refusal/failure of carmakers to introduce Zero Emission alternatives to the Infernal(sic) Combustion Engine? Or will the double standards ( mobile-phone vs. vehicle exhaust etc.) continue for another decade or two??
As a city cyclist I have no choice but to breathe other peoples' fumes - by contrast we can of course all choose not to use, or overuse, a mobile phone. So which is the greater scandal and the greater health hazard?
