HOTWIRE:
ZAP 'ROCKS'
|
January 1998
Zero emission, electric bikes - fantastic! So following my brother's advice,I went
off to my local library which had just introduced free
public internet access and took my first tentative steps into
cyberspace. The amount of information on alternatives to fossil fuel vehicles was astonishing. ZAP was just the beginning. 'Electric vehicle' typed in the search engine threw
up a plethora of EV websites to keep me busy for several lifetimes.I was
hooked. San Francisco, once an exotic mysterious film set on the
other side of the planet with no relevance to my life whatsoever was now my
reference point.
We didn't need to breathe filthy air. Clearly vested interests were
keeping this technology quiet. Where was the headline media coverage? I
had never heard any of our alleged pro-innovation, pro-technology
politicians say electric and vehicle in the same sentence.Yet on the web
there they stood defiantly side by side, provoking a heated debate.I
subscribed immediately to all the EV mailing lists. Checking the email from
my new contacts in San Francisco, posing questions about this amazing technology became
the focal point of my day.
